Childrens Swimming Lessons

All courses are £49.80 per person and are booked in 12 week blocks, with each lesson lasting 30 minutes. Parents & Toddler, Aqua Tots, Ducklings and Levels 1 & 2 take place in the small pool, levels 3 to 10 and Over 8's Level 1 & 2 are in the large pool.

If you are unsure as to which lesson your child should be entered at please book into a free assessment, you can book here or at Swim & Fitness reception. Please note that an assessment is not needed for Parent & Toddler, Aqua Tots, Duckling and Level 1 sessions.

Private lessons are also available for adults and children. Subject to availability.

Parent & Toddler (0-2 years)

This class aims to build the child and parent's confidence through a playful, fun, active atmosphere whereby the teacher will deliver a series of nursery rhymes along with actions where words are adapted to suit the water theme. Parents are advised on how to handle the child in water, including rotation, flotation and submersion. For this class it is compulsory that the parent/guardian (16 years+) accompanies the child in the water. Please bring armbands, swim vests or buoyancy jackets.

Aqua Tots (2-3 years)

This lesson gives the child opportunity to develop skills with confidence in a playful, safe and enjoyable environment. Aqua Tots is created with similar elements from Duckling lessons by involving parents (16 years+) to participate in the class, encouraging the child in progressing onto the next level. Please note that children will be able to achieve Duckling awards 1 to 4. Please bring armbands, swim vests or buoyancy jackets.

Ducklings (3-4 years)

Within this lesson children will cover a range of skills, games, basic swimming requests in order to achieve Puffin Award and Duckling 1-5. If your child is in full time education (aged 4 years +) please contact the swim co-ordinator for alternative options. Please note that children will be unaccompanied by a parent or guardian for this class.

National Teaching Plan Lessons


Developing basic safety awareness, initial orientation, water confidence, basic movement, co-ordination and water skills.The aim of this lesson is to encourage the child to swim confidently and comfortably over a minimum distance of 5 metres, without armbands, to enable progression onto the next level. Please note that children will be unaccompanied by a parent or guardian for this class.

Developing safe entries into the water including jumping in, basic floating, submersion, unaided travel and rotation to regain an upright position. The aim of this lesson is to deliver the basics of the following strokes frontcrawl, backstroke and breaststroke over a minimum distance of 10 metres.


This group taught within the main pool.  It is designed for children who are not quite at level 3 standard, nervous of the main pool or lack confidence in their ability to swim safely in deeper water.  This class aims to assist the child in developing their confidence and ability to travel half lengths covering frontcrawl, backstroke and breastroke.  It will teach basic life skills such as jumping in and resurfacing, treading water, swimming set distances without stopping and getting to and from the edge safely, confidently and with ease.


Developing safe entries including submersion, progressing rotation skills and water safety knowledge. The aim of this lesson is to demonstrate a sound knowledge of frontcrawl, backstroke and breaststroke with an understanding of Butterfly, streamlining, breathing, body positioning, timing & co-ordination, covering a minimum distance of 15 metres.

LEVEL 4 & 5

Developing the understanding of buoyancy through a range of skills, refining kicking and techniques for all strokes including butterfly.The child must be able to consistently demonstrate a confident, comfortable and recgonisable stroke over a minimum distance of 50 metres directed by the ASA enabling progression to the next level.

LEVEL 6 & 7

Consistant circuits developing ‘watermanship’ through sculling and treading water skills, with complete rotation, co-ordinated breathing, water safety aspects and understanding of preparation for exercise performing all strokes to the given standard as directed by the ASA covering a minimum distance of 400 metres, plus an introduction to lifesaving skills.


Once the swimmer has developed a core range of skills required to be confident, competent and safe in the water through stages 1-7, the swimmer may then take part in the above aquatic discipline. This lesson covers drills, timed swims, stroke stamina, fitness and strength sessions for all strokes with consistant lengths.
